Super awesome video by Kirsten Dirksen on YouTube. She highlights this incredible custom shipping container home in unincorporated San Diego County, Ca.
The brilliant minds who envisioned this, Mike and Shawn McConkey, mention that the land was purchased in San Diego, Ca and “is zoned agricultural land out here so you can actually have a little cottage industry or a winery... or a container house.”
They designed the 720-square-foot hybrid shipping container home with three 20' cargo containers.
With a DIY mindset they were able to keep the total cost to$160,000, including design fees and permits. Which is a steal for such an amazing home in the San Diego mountains.
The McConkey's highlight that they stayed on budget with the interior by mixing IKEA and reclaimed items with a few beauties, like a $3800 rolling garage door that opens the home to the outside and unobstructed mountain views (see picture below).
The home is a hybrid of containers and stick frame structures that have ceilings as high as 13 feet between the containers to make the small space feel larger and to allow for natural cooling.
To keep the home operating with peak solar efficiency, they used a technique I use on my container rentals which is a cool roof (white reflective paint to reflect the suns uvs), and they also installed a tankless water heater.
Amazing in depth video that will inspire you to take an this type of amazing project.
