Google using cargo containers for a patented data center? You better believe it!!
I have said it before and I'll say it again- the uses for cargo containers are practically endless. However, even I never envisioned them being used for a high-tech data center, however, Google proved that a shipping container is excellent for that use too.
In 2005 Google launched a 45 cargo container data center that is housed with over 45,000 servers and supports a whopping 10 megawatts of IT equipment load. I'm not 100% sure what the equipment load thing means, but I had to write it as when I heard it, it sounded way to cool (and impressive!).
In October of 2007 Google successfully patented its cargo container concept, and for someone like me who loves cargo containers, I am thoroughly impressed at the creativity and ingenuity with the use of the shipping containers.
Using cargo containers makes sense as they are easily transportable, eco-friendly and cost effective and on top of those advantages they are also incredibly durable.
Google uses an impressive system to keep the cargo containers at a stable 81 degrees fahrenheit and stores roughly 1000 servers per cargo container.
I posted a video below, that was created by Google, that will give you a tour of their cargo container data center. Enjoy the video and thank you Google for showing me another awesome use for cargo containers!
