With the average head of lettuce having to travel over 1800 miles of surface road to reach the daily consumer, the folks at Local Roots decided to search for a new and more efficient method of farming.
This led them to my favorite thing- Cargo Containers. With an 8x40 shipping container they were able to find a way to produce the equivalent of 5 acres of traditional farming produce. The innovation in farming allows them to bring produce into the markets they service such as Los Angeles, Ca, without the 1800 mile travel.
When an 8x40 container arrives at their location, they are able to outfit it with irrigation, electricity, shelving and lighting, within a week to make the container a fully functional farm (or cargo container farm). Their farming techniques take away all the harmful practices of traditional farming and introduce growing into a controlled environment that produces quality food. No genetic modifications take place, just good ole fashioned farming with a cargo container twist!
The idea seems ingenious and I have posted the full video below. It was produced by Mashable News and runs close to three minutes. This idea seems like a game changer in farming and looks incredibly efficient.
I have also included a few pictures for you to view. Enjoy :)
