I found this awesome Bob Vila episode on the construction of shipping container homes in St Petersburg, Florida.
This is a two part episode (I have both episodes below) and I felt like they did a great job detailing the history of the company that created the cargo container homes (or as they call them Intermodal Steel Building Units- ISBU's) and what needed to be done to complete the construction process.
The biggest take away that I had was on the material they used to insulate the cargo containers from heat. They used a product named superthem (see their website by clicking this link
) which is a product similar to the one NASA uses on spaceships to insulate the shuttles. To apply the superthem they sprayed it onto the outside of the cargo containers, similar to what you would do to apply paint.
They mention the product during both episodes, however, during the first episode they do a cool demonstration on the products effectiveness with a small piece of metal and a blowtorch at around the 7:15 mark.
The video will also show you how they install their shipping container homes onto the foundation, how they install the wooden trusses on the roof and explain the challenges they had with the exterior of the homes due to the 4 different surface types they were working with (the cement foundation, the steel cargo containers, the metal framing, and the wooden gables).
